Microsoft Wanted to Rename Internet Explorer Because of Negative Perception

Nowadays, based on the Net Applications, Internet Explorer has more than a 58% web browser market share. This is about triple the market share of the second-place browser, Google GOOGLE -0.16% Chrome. But, Internet Explorer is known for having an awful reputation because early versions of the software were helpless to safety breaches so Microsoft MSFT +1.19% measured remake with a new name for the browser.

The potential rebranding was uncovered when engineers from Microsofts Internet Explorer platform team addressed inquiries during an Ask Me Anything (AMA) conversation on Reddit(American social news aggregation). Reddit client asianorange asked the Internet Explorer group: Have you ever thought of rebranding and altering the name of Internet Explorer?

Here is how a Microsoft engineer Jonathan Sampson answered:

Its been recommended inside; I recollect, especially a lengthy email thread where different people were passionately discussing it. A lot of plans get kicked approximately about how we can divide ourselves from negative perceptions that no more reflect our item today.

A follow-up enquiry was asked about for what reason they kept the Internet Explorer name after the discussion, Sampson included:

The conversation I remember seeing was an extremely late one (just a couple weeks back). Who knows what holds is in the future. This demonstrates that the name Internet Explorer may still be changed in the future.Microsoft has made moves to decline the fragmentation of its browsers. For example, it quit offering support for older versions of Internet Explorer and out-of-date ActiveX control. On January 12, 2016, Microsoft quitted supporting IE 9 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2, IE 10 for Windows Server 2012 and IE 11 for Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

The Internet Explorer group was inquiring about porting Internet Explorer to Android or iOS. Microsoft said that there are no present arrangements for Android-iOS. These arrangements may finally change because Android and iOS are the top mobile operating systems. Previously this year, Microsoft discharged Office for the iPad.

Microsoft said that it is scheduled to bring some of the features of the metro version of the browser to the desktop version. In the AMA, Microsoft said it may add FlipAhead, understanding view, swiping for back-forward and the capability to make use of the website pictures as Favorites of the desktop version of Internet Explorer.

In 2003, Internet Explorer was ruling with a 95% web browser market share because Microsoft packaged it with the Windows operating system. But, there was a huge gap in time where Microsoft did not renew its IE 6 browser. This gave Mozilla a chance to increase the web browser market share when it discharged the Firefox browser in 2004. Internet Explorer is still the most utilized browser in the world today, however its fame has been dropping because of rivalry against Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera.

It`s not a pleasant feeling. Particularly realizing that often times the judgement to not utilize Internet Explorer is mostly based on experiences from 10 years ago, and a much diverse IE, included Sampson in the AMA. That being said, we know it is our work to change the public awareness, and to win the hearts of users all over the place. Each one individual to open IE, and download one more browser, is someone else we will be working significantly harder tomorrow to win back.
